New page builder: Etch

Peter Heck

Last year in September, Kevin Geary announced a new page builder: Etch.

Without even showing an alpha version or mockups of the builder, the first 1,500 licenses were sold within a very short time. I also bought a partner license, simply because I was convinced that something big was in the making here. I was also convinced that Kevin’s track record (AutomaticCSS, Frames) was not vaporware – which is what many people thought!

Now, 9 months later, the version is still alpha and essential parts are still missing, but you can still build simple websites with it. I have therefore rebuilt my private site ( https://peter-heck.de ) with Etch.

But what is so special about Etch:

In Etch you have 100% access to the complete HTML, CSS and JS – you can work similarly to Codepen – but also with builder-typical inputs – just as you like. Inputs in the builder, for example, are mirrored 1:1 in real time in the CSS window and vice versa. Components are simply fantastic and enable the creation of elements with numerous variations (e.g. for cards). The generated code is super clean!

Professional website development is taking a leap into a new era with Etch!
